Anyone Can Help!

Recently I published a blog about the new Wilmington NC chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) that Tommy Underwood brought to PVMC. For five months, Tommy and many others have been building beds for children who do not have a proper bed to sleep on. Who builds these beds? Those who want to be a part of the solution to a problem that is so much bigger than most ever realized. 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Tommy said he has stood back on build days and just watched as the volunteers come together and work toward a common goal. The hum of the tools, the buzz of conversations, the smiles … the fact that in two rainy build days he never heard an argument or a cross word. Colossians 3:14, “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Tommy says the first thing an experienced woodworker notices when they show up for a build day is that the process is not very efficient. Tommy says the inefficiency is by design. “We give as many volunteers a chance to touch each bed as possible. We could automate and streamline our process – but we never want to do anything that would prevent a volunteer from being able to serve. Every task that goes into making these beds is so simple that almost anyone can do it. I love seeing 80+ year olds working alongside teens and even pre-teens. We have housewives, widows, bankers, salespeople, students, retirees….all working side by side and it’s just been incredible to watch as it develops.” Ephesians 4:12, “...to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Not only is the love of Jesus being shown to those who receive a bed, the team sees the love of Jesus when they come together to serve in the name of Jesus! “NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN”, SHP mission statement.
