A Special Delivery

Recently I published a blog about a new Wilmington NC chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) that Tommy Underwood has brought to PVMC. For five months, Tommy and many others have been building beds for children who do not have a proper bed to sleep on. Many kids sleep on floors or couches or three to a bed. This glimmer of an idea has made its first delivery!

As gratifying as build days are, Tommy says making the first deliveries took things to a new level. “I’ve done lots of mission work and I’ve seen families living in abject poverty and I’ve seen how showing families a little love can change their entire perspective; it can give them a new hope.” 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” SHP is all about the kids and Tommy has “preached that message” but didn’t really understand what it meant until the first bed was delivered.

“We set up our first bed and when the 10 year old saw it and realized that we were really leaving it for him he fell onto the mattress and kissed it. The mom was appreciative but this bed is something that the boy can call his own. He has a safe place of his own now where he can go hide under the covers if he’s scared or he can daydream about his future. The more we worked to assemble his bed, the bigger his smile grew. By the time we left, he was almost glowing. There really aren’t words to describe my feelings but watching a dream be fulfilled was amazing. I hope that no matter how many beds we build and deliver, I never lose that sense of why we do what we do.” Acts 20:35, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Thanks SHP that “NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN”!
