Ministry & Dentistry
I had heard that our new pastor, Sheena Smith, in Leland, “could really preach.” Tina told me that she is like a female Tim with their southern accent, preaching and sense of humor. Prior to Christmas I got to hear Pastor Sheena preach and she was wonderful. She is “real” and I heard others say, down to earth and authentic. You won’t be surprised at what she wants me to share.
Growing up, Sheena's mother always said she would be a preacher or a comedian. Sheena said she could be both! At 26 years old, she started lay ministry. Because Jesus was relatable, she wants to be relatable. “The most important thing in ministry is to remember I am not Jesus. Just like John the Baptist, I am there to introduce the Gospel and in all things I do to point people to Jesus who saves, redeems and makes all things new.” She said every Sunday morning she gives her all - preaching God’s Word.
Sheena is a single mother to two boys, ages 9 and 15. She was born and grew up in Nakina and is now raising her family there. She shares this for you to know what season she is in, not for you to think she feels being a single mother is a handicap, burden or hardship. Sheena says she can do all things through Christ. Philippians 4: 13, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” And she always remembers Romans 8: 28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” “You have to be an available vessel for the Holy Spirit in whatever season you are in.”
Pastor Sheena is a dental assistant “just down the road” (had to use some southernisms) in Calabash, where she tries to show the love, grace and mercy like Jesus shows her. “When it comes to ministry or dentistry, I am your girl! I can cover heartaches to toothaches.” I think Sheena was right, she can do comedy and preaching! Welcome to the family, Pastor Sheena!
Sheena will be preaching at the Wilmington campus on Thursday, January 26 and Sunday, January 29.
